Book Review 5: Retribution by Jilliane Hoffman

Retribution, Jilliane. P. Hoffman’s debut novel is not great literature –or literature at all- but it is a very satisfying read, and it should make for a good movie.

It is a suspenseful, well-paced, dark chiller-thriller that tells the story of a young law student, Chloe Larson who lives in New York City and has three problems: she is stressed out about passing the bar examination, her boyfriend won’t propose to her, and, unbeknownst her, a psycho is stalking her.

Her world is changed for whenever when the psycho, dressed as a clown, enters her bedroom and rapes and tortures her.

12 years later, she is known as C.J. Townsend and she lives and works in Miami as a prosecutor. One of her cases is a high-profile one wherein a man is accused of killing ten women. When C.J first hears him speak, she is positive, from the sound of his voice and a scar on his arm, that he is the man who raped her. But she is not sure if he is the serial killer. If she speaks up about her doubts, the case will be dismissed and she will not be able to prosecute him as her rapist as the statute of limitations for that crime has passed. This leads to all sorts of ethical questions, and plot twists and turns,
and a superb ending. It’s worth a read
